Chairmans Blog Spring 2015

Tideswell running club has been a very busy place to be over the last few months.

TRC Christmas Party 2014

We had the TRC Christmas party at The Anchor, Tideswell with fun galore. We had fantastic food laid on and everyone got into festive mood.

Julie Nuttall won the prize for charity shop chic, with her Stunning Dress which she managed to pick up for a song!

Andy Watkins First TRC Club Champion

During the Evening our Club Champion for 2014 was announced. Andrew Watkins taking the the very first title, with a See the Championship results 2014. 2015 looks set to be a very promising championship, with lots of runners keen to take Andy’s title and Andy keen to defend it.

Andy Watkins Club Champion 2014

The committee have been hard at it making the club even better to be a part of.  We have been stream-lining the everyday running of the club, revamping the website, planning new sessions training sessions to introduce over the year and much more.

Couch to 5K (C25K) success

2015 C25k – Final 5k at Congleton.

In January we had the start of the C25K 2015 group, I would like to thank all 26 participants and congratulate them on their journey.

This winter was a tough adversary and you all managed to overcome its icy grip and continue with the program. It was so good to see you complete the course with the final 5k at Congleton Parkrun on the 4th of April.

Lots of New Members

We have had new members galore join the club and seen existing members training for new challenges like half marathon, marathon and an ultra. With the club champs well under way, things are starting to hot up and I’m looking forward to seeing people challenge Andrew Watkins title over the year and seeing the club colours on show!

Look out for a few Race reports which are all in the pipeline. Remember if you are running for TRC and you compete in a race, we’d love to give you coverage and the respect you deserve. Send your photos in.

TRC at the Dronfield 10k 2015

March 8th saw a small team from Tideswell Running Club venture over to Dronfield for the annual 10k road race.

The Dronfield course is involves a couple of loops, one repeated, through the Western end of the town.  Gentle slopes interspersed with steady inclines, short sharp hills and long pleasant downhills made for an interesting course.  The huge turnout of runners across all abilities and the impressive organisation made it a most enjoyable race.  Great crowds including the TRC Supporters Club around the course offered encouragement and support.

The Tideswell Team consisted of Pete Hawkins, Paul Thorn, Heather Marsden & Phil Gregory, with support from Ben & Kathryn Brindley and Fiona Newman.

The race which is organised by the 7th Dronfield Scout Group, had a very professional start with each runner wearing an electronic chip on their shoe, which really is necessary in a race with 839 runners, because it takes about a minute from the time the gun goes off to get over the start line.

The course is run on the roads around Dronfield Woodhouse. Starting at the Jolly Farmer pub, runners have to complete one lap of the small loop and 2 of the larger loop. Dronfield 10K Route

Pete Hawkins - TRC
Pete Hawkins (above) said this about the race:

“Dronfield 10K…  the day of the first 10K race of the year dawned cold, windy and with a threat of rain.  That and a right foot pain that had prevented any running the previous week so far for ideal preparation.

Definitely one for next year’s calendar and who knows, a bit more discipline on those hills with slightly less walking and that 10K PB may be goner too.”

Heather Marsden

Phil Gregory

Phil Gregory (above) said:

“Despite doing a good recce of the race the course the week before, I had a real shocker. I didn’t warm up sufficiently and struggled with pacing. Ben Brindley our Chairman helped me on the 2nd lap though by pacing me, and helped me save face a bit.

A tough course, but definitely a course for a PB if you come with the right attitude. Really well organised too”

Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships

Derbyshire County Cross Country Championships

Tideswell Running Club proudly competed in The Derbyshire Athletics Cross Country Championships 2015 at Wollaton Park.

Cross Country is something of a new experience for most of our members, but a few of our more adventurous runners stepped up to the plate to represent our Club.

The team comprised of Dan Allen, Ben Brindley, Stu Rook, Colette Holden, Linda Howard and George Willingham and Fiona Newman. They put up a good fight in the face of some stiff opposition from larger and more experienced teams.  Well done to our Cross Country runners and we can’t wait to build up the team ready for the next events.

Comments from runners

“Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed taking part in the first running of your “Litton Christmas Cracker”.

The course was a worthy challenge, especially the underwater section by the river ! Well marshaled and flagged and excellently organised by an obviously enthusiastic and friendly running club. Everyone seemed to enjoy the post race crack and even a barbecue in December!
The whole event made my journey from Norfolk worthwhile.
Well done to all concerned at Tideswell RC and thanks again.”

Nigel Horney (race no 25)

Many thanks ”

TRC at the Heanor 10k Pud Run 2014

TRC at the Heanor 10k Pud Run 2014

With the end of 2014 looming and the start of the 2015 Club Championship about to start next month, Tideswell Running club produced a good team for the “Matthew Walker 10k Pudding Run” which was organised by Heanor Running Club.

The race was much anticipated by our club as we had heard from Ben that the course was a good one. We later learned that due to bad weather last year Heanor RC had been forced to change the route, so were really running blind, apart from the map featured on the HRC website we didn’t have much to go on.

Heanor Pud Run Route

Heanor Pudding Run Map

Eight runners from Tideswell Running Club took part in the race, Ben Brindley and Pete Hawkins were our Group One speedsters and the rest of us were from Group Two. Victoria Fell, Colette Holden, Julie Nuttall, Kathryn Brindley, Andrew Turner and myself. We had Nadeen Plumtree & Sue Hawkins in support, taking photos, cheering us on and keeping our kit safe. Luckily, we managed to meet at the registration point so we were all in good spirits before the off.

Well Organised Race Event

Tideswell Running Club would like to offer our thanks and congratulations to Heanor RC for a very professional, fun, well organised and welcoming atmosphere with friendly and encouraging stewards on hand to help and guide runners.

Heanor Pud Run 2014
The race sold out it’s 1000 entries and 884 runners finished. Despite the removal of the “big hill”, there were still a good mix of terrain with plenty of uphill stretches, downhill, overtaking opportunities and long road/path stretches, so really something to suit all runners except perhaps the hardened ‘Fell’ types.

I personally found it a challenging course, perhaps because I didn’t know the course so it was pretty hard to set a common pace, hopefully I’ll master that with more experience  Our club chairman Ben Brindley was pushing himself so hard he was sick halfway round.  Tideswell RC all did really well even earning a few PB’s. As a club, this was  another good showing, considering most of us have been running less than a year. Well done everyone!

Minutes of Meeting

1. Apologies

The following members sent their apologies:
– Jude Wildgoose
– Angela Foulkes
– Liam Ashton
– Philippa Hunstone
– Lesley Turner

2. Chairman’s Report

Ben welcomed members to the AGM and thanked them for getting involved and making the club what it is today. He spoke about the committee that was elected at last year’s AGM and explained that Pete Hawkins joined the committee later in the term as a non-role member. Ben also noted the huge success of the C25k program and the Inter Inns race. The club’s social activities were also mentioned as well as the club’s first ever club championships. He also commented on the impressive turnout at races from the runners and the fabulous TRC support team! Ben thanked George on behalf of Ashford Lane Garage for his support in sponsoring the Litton Christmas Cracker, the club’s first ever fell race, the “Litton Christmas Cracker”.

3. Club Secretary’s Report

Dan seconded what Ben had talked about and he thanked Sue for her hard work and help with getting the club champs up and running and for being “Acting Secretary” whilst Dan was getting settled into University.

4. Treasurer’s Report

Kathryn circulated details of the the club’s credits and debits from the last year. Due to the donation from Asford Lane Garage for the Litton Christmas Cracker and the higher number of C25K participants than expected, the club is in a relatively good position financially. Profits will be able to go towards coaching courses.

5. Election of New Committee

(a) Chairman
Ben Brindley re-stood as Chairman for 2014-15. Ben’s candidacy was proposed by Sue Jeff and seconded by Dan Allen, the position was unopposed.

(b) Club Secretary
Sue Jeff was elected as the new Club Secretary for 2014-15, in place of Dan Allen. Sue’s candidacy was proposed by Kathryn Brindley and seconded by Ben Brindley, the position was unopposed.

(c) Treasurer
Kathryn Brindley re-stood as Treasurer for 2014-15. Kathryn’s candidacy was proposed by Dan Allen and seconded by Nadeen Plumtree, the position was unopposed.

(d) IT Secretary
Phil Gregory was elected as the new IT Secretary for 2014-15, a new role. Phil’s candidacy was proposed by Nadeen Plumtree and seconded by Dan Allen, the position was unopposed.

(e) Kit Secretary
Ben and Kathryn Brindley were re-elected to share the responsibilities of Kit Secretary for 2013-14. Their candidacy was proposed by Beverley Shaw and seconded by Libs Slattery, the position was unopposed.

(f) Non-role Committee Member
Dan Allen and Andrew Watkins both stood for this position. Dan was proposed by Kathryn Brindley and seconded by Nadeen Plumtree. Andrew was proposed by Sue Jeff and seconded by Ben Brindley. This went to a member vote with a result of 5 votes for Dan and 17 votes for Andrew. Andrew Watkins was elected.

(g) Social Committee
The club proposed that members outside of the club committee organise the club’s social activities and outings. This was a very welcomed idea. Those who volunteered are Sue Pitman, Nadeen Plumtree, Beverley Shaw, Libs Slattery, Alison Birch and Liz Hill.

6. Club Fees

Kathryn explained to the club that England Athletics have increased their club fees. This year, we were charged a club affiliation fee of £75 plus £10 per member. For the coming year, the club affiliation fee is £100 plus £12 per member so to allow for this increase, we have agreed to increase our club fees to £20 for the full year and £15 for those who join after April 1st.

7. Run Planning and Run Leadership

Ben Brindley reiterated the importance of turn backs during club runs and that those who are at the front of the group are to run further back than the last person before turning round. If people are finding the run too slow then they should possibly be in the next group up.

Ben encouraged members to propose new routes and sessions, throughout the year, which the club could run. This could involve running in different areas near Tideswell, or having “away days” and run routes away from the village. Members also offered to lead runs.

8. Club Development

(a) Coaching Qualifications
Dan Allen has been keeping an eye on the current courses on offer and will inform members of suitable courses within reasonable travelling distance. It was also noted that the profit made within the club can go towards paying for somebody to gain one of these qulaifications.

(b) Club Representation at Local Races
The Club Championships were discussed and a meeting has been set up for 6th November at the Anchor Inn. The aim is to decide on 2 races per month (one road and one fell race). A new points system was explained by Sue Jeff who is going to co-ordinate the Club Championships.

(c) Club Kit
Members were asked to email the club if they wish to order any vests or hoodies. A few members expressed an interest in club t-shirts. Kathryn is looking into this.

9. Virgin London Marathon Club Place

The committee decided that the club place should go to somebody who entered the ballot but didn’t receive a place. Andy Flanagan and Paul Thorn were the only two members who entered and neither received a place. Andy has made alternative arrangements for a race so he was happy for Paul Thorn to receive the place.

10. Star Cup

The Star Cup was awarded to Kathryn Brindley for the organisational work that she puts in behind the scenes and the assistance in leading C25K and club runs. Also for her dedication with turning up for club runs each week.
Honourable mentions:
Ben Brindley
George Willingham
Sue Jeff
Nadeen Plumtree
Colette Holden
Nigel Jeff

11. Litton Christmas Cracker

Advertising of the race was mentioned through various mediums and locations including local newspapers, retail outlets and online. Nigel asked all members for cakes as prizes to be delivered to him the day before (Saturday 13th December!) so he could wrap them. Raffle prizes have also been asked for so please donate anything you can. Thank you! Thanks to Alison and Holdsworth for donation mince pies and also George and Ashford Lane Garage for the kind sponsorship. Liz Hill has also offered to assist with getting hold of road cones for the race.

12. Christmas Party

We settled on the venue of the Anchor Inn and the date of 11th December for the Christmas Party. It will be a hot buffet with pudding for £11.50 per head. We have use of the whole pub so partners can also be invited.

13. Any Other Business

Outdoors Outings
Colette mentioned bimonthly outdoors outings for the club. Suggested activities include climbing (in or out), high ropes (Go Ape or similar), kayaking/canoeing, ice-skating, gliding at Abney, Millers Dale abseiling, MTB, Pete’s navigation courses, etc etc. Some could be kiddy-friendly, others not. Colette offered to organise and look into different ideas and activities and let the club know.

Co-ordinator of Cross Country Championships
Sue Jeff has offered to organise and research everything regarding setting up teams for the Cross Country Champs. Colette Holden and Stuart Rook were asked if they would co-ordinate the mens and womens teams. They agreed.

The date of 5th January was decided as the start of the C25K program. The proposed 5k date will be 4th April with the No Walk In The Park or a Parkrun suggested. Many of the members who completed the program earlier in the year have offered to assist with vaious roles during the C25K 2015 program. Volunteers can assist on a rota basis (a rota will be devised) so that the roles can be shared. Ben will lead the Monday sessions each week and will be the main point of contact. Phil Gregory has offered to assist with the online advertising of the program through social media.

Ben Brindley Thanked everybody for coming to the AGM and for their support over the last year.

TRC Chairman’s Blog – August 2014
Well, where do I start? So much has happened over the last few months!

We had an amazing success with the Inter Inns race in June with more runners than expected and a great atmosphere. We managed to become a part of the Tidza Wakes festivities calendar and the Inter Inns is a wonderful race in its own right.

In July we had a great day at the TRC family picnic in the grounds of Chatsworth, with food, fun and games and the most fun game of rounders ever.

Club Championship

The club championships have been a closely fought competition with Andrew Watkins being “Mr Consistent”.

and Colette Holden being “Little Miss Fell Runner”.

We have had numerous other successes from our great club’s runners.

Sheldon Fell Race

Dan Allen of TRC winning his class at Sheldon fell RaceThe races have been fun social events with an impressive turnout from the runners and of course, the fabulous TRC support team!

At Sheldon Fell race Dan Allen came 1st in his age category and 14th overall, which is a fantastic effort when you consider that Dan had been injured for most of the spring and this was his first competitive race for months.

Well done Dan!

Taddington Lanes Race

We had an outstanding turnout at Taddington Lanes Race with 13 club members racing and lots of supporters. We created an amazing air of excitement, camaraderie and inclusion.

We had some great results: Liam Ashton coming 3rd overall and 2nd senior, myself coming 5th overall and 3rd senior and Tony Dent coming 1st local. We also had great personal successes from runners including Bev Shaw, Libs Slattery and Kathryn Brindley.

Kimbolton Half Marathon

Nigel Jeff’s heart rate training paid off at the weekend with a PB of 1:28:28 at Kimbolton Half Marathon – awesome effort Nigel!

Inter Inns Run – 2014 Report & Results

TRC & Tidza Wakes

TRC and Tideswell Wakes organised a very successful Tideswell Inter Inns 5k race, with over 50 participants! The race set off from Just below the Market Square, above the star Inn. There was a good turnout of supporters at the start line, and the pace was quick from the start.

We were pleasantly surprised at how many people lined the village streets to cheer the runners as they got the race underway. Derbyshire’s road races are made special by the support that the crowd provides, helping to spur the runners on.

The weather was extremely hot, for an evening, with many runners reporting that they struggled on the outward leg of the route, as they were running into the sun.

Tideswell Running Club Well Represented

TRC showed up in force with 16 members taking part.

TRC Chairmans Report – May 2014

Over the last few months it has been a very busy time at TRC with lots going on. We have had the amazingly successful C25K with the finale at “No Walk In The Park”, in Chesterfield. Club members have been taking part in various races ranging from Chatsworth 3k to Brighton Marathon and beyond!

We have also gained many new members and that is what this Chairmans Report is about. With the influx of new members there has been an increased air of camaraderie and inclusion which for me has been truly inspirational!

Hearing all of your stories of achievement:  the highs, the lows and most of all the banter that goes with it. Tideswell Running Club was set up with one thing in mind and that was to bring like minded people together and now the club is starting to mature and expand, this ethos is now even more prevalent than ever.

So raise a glass to TRC, its members and the future!
